Pain Is a Language, Not an Enemy

Sep 11, 2026

We've all been taught the same lesson about pain, whether anyone ever said it out loud: fight it. Push through it. No pain, no gain. Man up.

I've spent twenty years with my hands on people's bodies, and I can tell you what that mentality actually does — it leaves us at war with ourselves. It leaves us bracing against the very signal that's trying to protect us.

Pain Is a Language, Not an EnemySo this month, in the Connection & Story Circle, we're doing something different. We're asking: what if pain is a language? And what if we stopped fighting it long enough to listen?

The Body's Emergency Signal

Pain, at its simplest, is protective. Touch a hot stove, and that jolt of pain isn't your enemy — it's your body shouting get away, this will hurt you. It's love, in its sharpest form.

But pain is rarely that simple for long. Pain researcher Lorimer Moseley put it well: "The biology of pain is never really straightforward, even when it appears to be."  What you've lived through — physically, emotionally, spiritually — shapes how pain shows up in you.  No two bodies carry it the same way.

A Culture at War With Pain

Here's the trouble: we live in a culture that treats pain like something to conquer.  We fight it, override it, shove it down, wear it as a badge of honor.  And what I've learned — in my own body and in two decades of bodywork — is that pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.  It's the resistance to pain that turns it into suffering.

Eckhart Tolle said it this way: "Do not resist your pain. Surrender to the grief, despair, fear, loneliness, or whatever form the suffering takes. Witness it without labeling it mentally. Allow it to be there. Embrace it."

When you stop fighting your pain — when you let it be a message instead of an opponent — something in you exhales. The war itself was half the weight you were carrying.

An Invitation, Not a Fix

This isn't about eliminating pain overnight, or having some perfect spiritual response to it. It's about a small shift: curiosity instead of combat. Listening instead of shoving down.

This month in the Circle, we're exploring exactly what it means to listen to pain — where it lives in the body, what it's often trying to say, and a simple practice for beginning that conversation with yourself.

If you've ever felt like your body was working against you, I want you to know — it might just be trying to talk to you.  And you're allowed to listen.
