What Happens When You Actually Stop
Jul 17, 2026Most of us don't find out what the pause holds until we're actually in it.
We can read about stillness. We can intend to slow down. We can put it on the calendar and mean it completely. But until we actually stop — body, breath, to-do list and all — we don't really know what's waiting on the other side.
I've been thinking about that this week as we move deeper into July's theme of The Pause. Because there's a difference between knowing the pause as a concept and feeling it as an experience. One lives in the mind. The other lives in the body. And the body is where the real work happens.
Here's what I've noticed — both in my own life and in the work I do with women:
The pause almost always holds something unexpected.
Sometimes it's emotion that's been waiting for a quiet moment to surface. Sometimes it's a clarity that couldn't find its way through the noise. Sometimes it's something as simple as realizing how tired you are — how long you've been moving at full speed without noticing.
The pause doesn't create what's there. It just finally gives you enough space to see it.
That's why this month's practice isn't really about slowing down for its own sake. It's about creating the conditions for honesty. For noticing. For the true thing to surface before the automatic thing takes over.
And it's why I believe so deeply in gathering like the one we're having tomorrow.
Because there is something particular that happens when women pause together. When we move our bodies and then go still. When we share an honest story and then listen to another woman's. When we let sound carry us somewhere words can't reach.
Something loosens. Something settles. Something that's been waiting gets a chance to arrive.
If you've been sitting on the edge of joining us tomorrow morning — this is your sign. Not because you have to, but because you deserve a few hours of exactly this. Movement. Circle. Rest. In the trees. With women who are doing the same honest work you are.
And if tomorrow isn't your day — that's okay too. The pause is still yours. One breath, all the way to the bottom of the exhale. That's the whole practice. It's available right now, wherever you are.
I'll see some of you on the mountain tomorrow morning. For the rest of you — I hope this week holds at least one moment of real stillness. The kind that surprises you with what it contains.
