What the Mountain Left Behind

Jul 23, 2026

We came down from the mountain last Saturday and I've been sitting with it ever since.

Not in an analyzing way. More in the way you sit with something that moved you — quietly, carefully, not quite ready to put words to it yet. Letting it settle before you try to name it.

Which, I realize, is its own kind of pause.

Twenty-three women gathered at the Woodland Park Pavilion last Saturday morning. We moved together in yoga. We sat in circle and told honest stories. We lay down and let Kristen's sound bath carry us somewhere words can't follow. And then we came back — slowly, gently — and went home.

What I keep returning to is something that happens in gatherings like that one. Something I've noticed every time women come together with intention in nature.

People arrive carrying the week. You can see it — the held shoulders, the slightly distracted eyes, the energy of someone who has been needed in twelve directions and hasn't quite landed yet. And then, somewhere in the first twenty minutes — sometimes during the yoga, sometimes in the first shared breath of circle — something releases. The body remembers it doesn't have to perform here. The nervous system gets the message that this is safe. And something true, something that's been waiting quietly underneath the pace of ordinary life, begins to surface.

That's what the pause makes possible. Not just a moment of quiet — but a return. To yourself. To what's actually true. To what was there all along, waiting for you to get still enough to notice.

We practiced it in our breath that morning. We practiced it in the circle. And then Kristen gave us an entire hour of it — sound moving through the body like water finding its level, settling into every place that had been held too tight.

I drove home with the windows down and didn't turn on the radio.

That felt important. That felt like the practice continuing — not clutching at the morning to make it last, but letting it move through me on its own terms. Trusting that what I needed from it, I had already received.

That's the thing about the pause that I want to leave you with as we move into the final week of July:

You don't have to hold onto it. You don't have to make it last or recreate it or worry that it's slipping away. The pause isn't a destination. It's a capacity — one that grows quietly every time you practice it, every time you take that one breath to the bottom of the exhale before you respond, every time you choose stillness for even thirty seconds in the middle of a loud day.

You practice it enough times and it starts to find you. In the in-between moments. In the unexpected quiet. In the pause that was always there, in every breath, waiting for you to notice it.

July is almost done. But the practice isn't going anywhere.
