When Words Reveal What We Value
Apr 30, 2026A bridge from April to May
I've been walking a lot this week, watching Colorado quietly slip from spring into early summer. The lilacs in my neighborhood have already been in full bloom. Hummingbirds are at the feeder weeks ahead of schedule. Scrub oak is fully leafed out where it should still be tender. It's a strange, fast-moving spring — and an honest one.
The land is showing me what it is. Not what I expected. Not what the calendar suggests. Just what it actually is, right now.
And I find myself thinking about how rare it is for us to do the same.
This month, we've been exploring how Thoughts & Words Shape Our World — the way the language we speak (out loud and to ourselves) builds the lives we live. We've looked at the inner voice. The stories we live inside. The narratives we inherit and the ones we keep choosing, often without realizing we're choosing.
It's been deep work. And as April ends, I want to leave you with something to carry into May.
Here it is:
The words we use are constantly revealing what we value —
even when we don't realize it.
Think about your own self-talk this week. Think about what you complained about. What you celebrated. What you were proud of. What you felt guilty about. What you said yes to without thinking, and what you said no to with relief.
Underneath every one of those thoughts is a value. Sometimes a value you'd consciously claim. Sometimes a value you didn't even know you held — or one you'd rather not be holding.
The voice that says I should be more productive — what does it actually value? Achievement? Recognition? The approval of someone who thought hard work was the price of love?
The voice that whispers I just want to sit on the porch and do nothing — what does that one value? Rest? Spaciousness? A version of yourself who isn't always proving something?
Both voices are telling you something true.
In May, we move into our next chapter together: Values as Your Trail Markers.
If April was about noticing the words that shape us, May is about uncovering the values underneath those words — the qualities that quietly drive everything we say, do, and choose.
It's the natural next step. You can't shift the words you use until you understand the values they're protecting. And you can't honor your values until you've heard the words your mind keeps repeating.
This is the threshold work. Notice it. Let it land.
The trail markers are coming into view.
A small invitation for the days ahead:
This weekend — or some quiet morning this week — pay attention to your inner dialogue. Don't try to fix it. Don't argue with it. Just listen. And ask:
If this voice is right, what does it think I value most?
Is that actually true for me?
You don't need an answer. The question is the practice.
In the wake of an early, dry spring, I'm reminded that the land doesn't argue with what is. It just shows up — leafed out, blooming, surviving — exactly as it is.
We can do the same. Not pretending we're somewhere we're not. Not forcing ourselves to want what we don't actually want. Just showing up honestly to the values that are quietly running our lives — and asking which of them are still ours to keep.
May's work is waiting. I'll meet you there.
With warmth, Angelique
