When Your Body Speaks First

The Language Beneath the Words

I went for a walk in the canyon this week — I could hear the water before I could see it.  I stopped and just listened...  I thought about how much information was moving through that sound — maybe some snowmelt, pressure, direction, distance.  The land communicating in a language older than words.

The body communicates the same way.

Before we've formed a thought, before we've found the words — something in us is already reading the room, reading the situation, reading the moment.  Most of us just haven't been taught to pay attention to it.

The Nervous System Is Always Listening

The nervous system is extraordinarily intelligent.  It reads tone of voice before the brain processes the words.  It detects a shift in energy in a room before we can name what changed.  It knows — in the tissue, in the breath, in the gut — long before the conscious mind catches up.

And here's something worth sitting with: it responds to our inner language in much the same way it responds to outer threat.

When the inner voice says something harsh — I always mess this up, I'm so far behind, I should be further along by now — the body doesn't process that as 'just a thought.'  It begins to prepare.  Cortisol rises. Breathing shallows.  Digestion slows.  The immune system subtly pulls back.

This isn't metaphor.  It's physiology.  And it's one of the reasons I find the mind-body connection so endlessly worth exploring — after 20+ years working with people's bodies, first as a massage therapist and now as a BodyMind coach, I've watched this pattern show up over and over again.  The body holds what the mind keeps repeating.

What Tension Might Be Communicating

One of the reframes that has stayed with me longest is this one: tension is not a malfunction.  It's communication.

Think about some of the ways it shows up.  Shoulders that creep toward the ears during a stressful week.  A throat that tightens right before a difficult conversation.  A hollow feeling in the chest after too much time scrolling.   A gripping in the belly when we agree to something we don't actually want to do.

These aren't random. They're the body's way of flagging something — often something the conscious mind hasn't quite gotten around to acknowledging yet.

This is one of the things I find most meaningful about working at the intersection of bodywork and coaching.  The body and the story aren't separate.  The body is often where the story lives first — and when we learn to listen to it, we tend to find that we've been holding more information than we realized.

A Simple Practice

If you'd like to try something right now, here it is:

Pause. Take one slow breath in through the nose and out through the mouth.

Scan gently from your jaw... down through your throat and shoulders... your chest... your belly.  Not looking for anything in particular.  Just noticing what's there.

And if you find somewhere that feels held or tight, ask — softly, without judgment — if this tension could speak, what might it say?

You don't need an answer.  The question itself tends to do something.  It shifts the nervous system, even slightly, from bracing to curiosity.  From defended to open.

That's not a small thing.  That kind of shift, practiced over time, is how real change takes root.

If This Resonates

Our Story Circle Gathering is coming up on April 23rd.  A small group, an unhurried evening, good food, and the kind of conversation that tends to go somewhere real.  There may still be a spot or two open.

And if any of this month's themes have made you curious about working more deeply — with your own patterns, your own body, your own story — I'm always open to a conversation about what 1:1 coaching might look like.  No pressure, just an exploration.
