Your Body Has Been Practicing This Your Whole Life

Jul 09, 2026

There's something I want you to try right now, before you read another word.

Take one breath.  Not a deep, controlled, intentional breath — just a regular one.  Let your body do what it already knows how to do.

At the very top of that inhale, just before the air starts to release — notice.  There's a pause.  Small, almost imperceptible.  A suspension between receiving and releasing.

Now follow the exhale all the way out.  At the very bottom, just before your body draws in the next breath — there it is again.  Another pause.  Quiet.  Complete.  Unhurried.

Your body has been doing that every single breath of your life.  Thousands of times a day.  Without being asked, without effort, without a reminder on your phone.

The pause isn't something you have to learn.  Your body already knows it.  We're simply learning to notice.

This is what I keep coming back to in July — that the practice we're building together isn't foreign to us.  It's not a new skill imported from somewhere else.  The pause is already woven into our biology.  The breath does it naturally.  The heart does it between beats.  Even the seasons do it...  that held moment at the solstice before the days start to shift.

What we're building is the ability to bring that same pause into the harder moments.  The conversation that's escalating.  The email that's sitting in your drafts.  The moment when the gremlin gets loud and the old pattern wants to run.

In those moments, the pause doesn't come as naturally.  We've practiced the reaction so many more times than we've practiced the stillness.  The body always reaches for what it knows.

But here's what I've found, both in my own life and in the work I do with women: the pause is always closer than it seems.  One breath is enough to find it.   One conscious exhale, followed all the way to the bottom — and suddenly there's a little more room. A little more choice.  A little more you.

That's not small.  That's everything.

This week, I want to invite you into one experiment.  Choose one situation in your life right now — one place where you tend to react before you're ready, or go quiet when you mean to speak, or say yes when your body is already saying no.

And when that situation arises this week, see if you can find the pause at the bottom of one exhale before you respond.  Just one breath.  All the way out.  Notice what's there.

The body already knows how to do this.  You're just giving it permission.

If you want to practice this with guidance, this month's audio body check-in inside the Connection and Story Circle walks you through the pause step by step — including a few minutes of silence to just feel it.  Members, it's waiting in Module 5.  If you're joining us on July 18 for Morning on the Mountain, we'll practice it together in the trees.
